I've been to several large and extensively competitive games over the years. Honestly, if you need an over abundance of refs then there is a problem with your player base. I personally am a fan of having lots of "in game" admins though; kind of like secret shoppers.

Players/teams that cheat usually do so because it's in their nature. I would just remove or ban individuals that cause issues to set the example. If someone is calling their hits and playing sportsmanlike only because someone is looking over their shoulder, I wouldn't want them out there.

Just my thoughts. Your game idea sounds fun though.

That is what we did actually, in game undercover ref, with emphasis on checking newer players, worked great!!

Hi Bong, I'm not so sure it's a good idea, I was at the 2 tournaments you organized and had a ton of fun but as in any competition we were stressed all day long, something I was not used to see during my 9 years in this sport.

I was in different sports before playing airsoft and in a competitive environment I saw bad things happen, friends started to take it too seriously and we didn't have fun anymore, only wanting to win.

When I didn't enjoy it anymore, I quit the sport because if I won I was happy and if I lost I was sad...that's not what I was looking for in a hobby, I have enough stress at work and I want to have fun with my buddies during my off time.

I know that most of our team members don't like to play in tournaments because they know that they take comptetition too seriously and they don't have fun competing against other teams.

We are afraid that it could change the friendship between teams as it evolves into a more competitive environment.

It's only my 2 cents, I love airsoft, I enjoy the friendship and camaraderie this sport brings us and I also greatly enjoy the games you organize but I think that 1 competition a year is a good idea and just enough.

A truly competitive person will never cheat to win; they understand that you never win if you cheat. Competitive based games come down to two things. For starters, "what type of games do you want to host", and "as a player, if you don't like competitive games, then don't attend them".

Of course you're right...but Bong is one the very active game organizer in our area...if we don't attend them we loose many games :(

One has to take in consideration that, in this case, we are talking about 2 events that were held over a 2 years period, during which the same organisor hosted over a dozen events with a pretty regular player base. So most teams have played against each other or together for quite a long time, also considering that those teams also attend games hosted by other people in the province.

This being said, IMO refs are not there to monitor the usual bad players behaviors such as not calling hits or else. Refs are playing a major role in making calls FAST over issues that might leave place to interpretation and give a unfair advantage to one or the other team. For instance, clarifying ambuigity about field limits, is this hole in the wall too small to shoot through, is the player inside the area hit by a grenade. In other words, making calls right away about anything that could be left to interpretation, even to the most honest players.

EDIT: and just to put in perspective how fast refs have to take their decisions, remember that the CQB event involves a 5 on 5 game with no respawn with a 30 minutes time limit. The game can be as short as 5 minutes.

You shed a light on something I didn't realise at first. Althought the tournaments are among the best games I attended... I agree that I would'nt want this pressure on my shoulder all season long. We always care about our performance, but it's different when it involves all your team and your team only.

Fun will always be the first reason why I organise, a bit of competition is fun, but i m afraid ranked league is too much.

I m very happy how it is evolving!!! Black BB are back on this year and a no camping rule will be in effect! 8 x 6 man teams this time, 15 mins rounds

I'm so glad to hear that this sort of thing has been successful.

Really dig the idea of a more sport focused game, I've only played a few, and I don't mind the whole everyone is friends, we all had a good time, but I think putting that little stress of winning or losing on a team increases the bond and communication overall of the team.
