VFC MP5 Impressions

Alright, this gun has been on the market for about a month now and I've worked on about 6 of them, so I think its time to give it a writeup.

For those that don't know, the big deal with these new MP5s from VFC is that they are fully V2 compatible, the first MP5 that's from a premium manufacturer. MP5s from G&G, CYMA, JG, CA, TM, ICS, etc all had their shortcomings in terms of actual build quality and feel. The best one was the discontinued VFC steel body MP5, and in second place was their standard zinc body, however they had proprietary gearboxes due to the 3 round burst system.

VFC listened to the market and re-released their MP5 using a standard V2 gearbox with Avalon internals.

Externals

Externally the gun looks solid. The coatings are even and the receiver doesn't wobble. The full A4 full stock is solid, the A5 stock wobbles as they all do but not to an excessive degree.

The selector is firm and feels better than other MP5s because it uses a gear system that goes underneath the gearbox, instead of having a shaft through the gearbox and attaching via a set screw.

Selector gear assembly

The plastic quality is very good for airsoft. The lower receiver is plastic, and has the Umarex warning and disclaimer engraved on it. The A5 foregrip is textured nicely and cleanly. A small seam line is present but it isn't obviously shitty like all the other MP5s on the market.

To all you HK chairsofters out there, yes you can HK slap it. How satisfying is it? Depends on the person. I'm used to real guns so HK slapping any toy gun still feels like a toy to me. Though, the design is updated so that it should not break the handle off like the older shitty MP5 designs.

Internals

Internally the gearbox is just a standard VFC Avalon gearbox except it comes with a standard ferrite motor instead of the neodymium motors the other Avalons come with. The gearbox uses the same parts as VFC M4s except the nozzle which is shorter (measured at 19.04mm), and a slightly different selector plate. The selector plate is not any funky design and is compatible with trigger board MOSFETs such as the BTC Spectre and Jefftron Leviathan.

I will add though, the nozzle on the MP5 does have an internal O-ring but it does not seal as well as VFC nozzles normally do. I just swap the O-ring when I open it up and it becomes a non issue.

As you can see, the gearbox is completely standard. The gearbox is held into the lower receiver by the two screws normally for the motor grip, as well as a plastic piece at the back that screws into the QSC spring guide and the lower receiver. The quick spring change works well, you just remove the two screws holding the rear plate in, remove the plate, and you have immediate access to the spring guide. It should be noted however that a rear wired gun routes the wires underneath the plate, which is a bit inconvenient.

As far as upgradeability goes, it is very good. The motor angle isn't perfect but it seems like it is good enough. The hop up unit is the standard Mp5 slider with the adjuster accessed under the mock bolt, though I kind of wish they went with the rotary style because the slider system sucks to adjust. Once adjusted, they are accurate though.

As of the day that I am writing this, I have worked on 6 VFC MP5s. I have installed 6 RHops performed 2 minor gearbox upgrades, fully rebuilt 4 gearboxes with Siegeteks, BTC, etc. These things have excellent upgrade potential, which was the main thing that was missing from the previous MP5s on the market along with general build quality.

Fully upgraded VFC MP5 gearbox

With all this praise though, I do have some gripes.

-I wish VFC would bring back their stamped steel receivers. The zinc body is not bad, but it does not compare with their discontinued stamped steel bodies.
-The two pin retainers in the A4 full stock are actual holes through the stock that retain the pins. You can see this as an aesthetically good thing, but it prevents you from fitting a big brick battery in the full stock.
-The hop up unit works but kinda sucks. they should have gone with a rotary unit.
-The orangle muzzle cannot be easily replaced
-Stock mag is a horrible hi-cap. Some of them literally don't fit in the guns they come with. They all seem to work fine with standard MP5 midcaps though.

So far, the VFC MP5 is a huge step forward in the MP5 market. There is finally a decent MP5 with good upgradeability. Someone finally improved on the shitty old TM MP5 design and managed to do it without making a proprietary gearbox or making huge performance compromises.

All in all its a good buy. I'd consider it the only GOOD MP5 on the market, which would explain its popularity upon release. I give it a stamp of approval with room for improvement.

Great review.

1. Can an Avalon m4 gearbox be dropped into the previous version of the Vfc mp5?

2. Does it take a standard aeg barrel and bucking?

1. You need to swap the selector plate and nozzle. You may also need to re-wire it.

2. Standard barrel and rubber.
